Rock Dove

The Rock Dove (Columba livia), or feral pigeon, is a member of the bird family Columbidae, doves and pigeons. In common usage, this bird is often simply referred to as the "pigeon".
Rock Doves have been domesticated for several thousand years, giving rise to the domestic pigeon. Trained domestic pigeons are able to return to the home loft if released at a location that they have never visited before and that may be up to 300 miles away. A special breed, called homing pigeons has been developed through selective breeding to carry messages and members of this variety of pigeon are still being used in pigeon racing. (This information was taken from the Wikipedia Encyclopedia).
The rock doves that many white dove release businesses are now using, are off spring off the racing homers. The racing pigeons are bred for speed and are trained to fly back to their lofts as soon as they are released.
While this works well to win a 300 mile race, it isn't something that we are looking for in a white dove release. The birds that we are breeding and training will generally circle for anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes after being released, thus putting on a show that is enjoyed by the people at the event they are released at.
I am breeding for a smaller, bird with large dark eyes and a more rounded head, that is comfortable around a lot of people.

Some unethical release companies may offer you a "White Dove Release" with real doves, I hope that you will not fall for this. The birds that they will either release or better yet send them to you for you to release, will not fly up and circle over head before returning to their loft. They will in fact end up being supper on the go for a hungry bird of prey. They have no homing instinct so they are helpless once they are released. They have been raised in-doors and do not have the skills necessary to survive in the wild.
Please check and make sure that you use a reputable white dove release company to ensure that your event is truly a memorable occasion and not a disaster with confused birds landing in the nearest tree.
